چکیده

Plasma confined in a magnetic dipole field is stabilized by the expansion of the magnetic flux. The stability of low beta electrostatic modes in a magnetic dipole field is examined when the distribution function is Maxwellian to lowest order. It is shown using a Nyquist analysis that for sufficiently gentle density and temperature gradients the configuration would be expected to be stable to both magnetohydrodynamic and collisionless interchange modes. Furthermore, it is shown that when it is stable to the interchange mode it is also stable to ion temperature gradient and collisionless trapped particle modes, as well as modes driven by parallel dynamics such as the ‘‘universal’’ instability. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-664X~98!02610-X#

Magnetohydrodynamic Stability in a Levitated Dipole

Plasma confined by a magnetic dipole is stabilized, at low beta, by magnetic compressibility. The ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) requirements for stability against interchange and high-n ballooning modes are derived at arbitrary beta for a fusion grade laboratory plasma confined by a levitated dipole. A high beta MHD equilibrium is found numerically with a pressure profile near marginal stabil...

Dipole Equilibrium and Stability

A plasma confined in a dipole field exhibits unique equilibrium and stability properties. In particular, equilibria exist at all β values and these equilibria are found to be stable to ballooning modes when they are interchange stable. When a kinetic treatment is performed at low beta we also find a drift temperature gradient mode which couples to the MHD mode in the vicinity of marginal interc...

Pressure profiles of plasmas confined in the field of a magnetic dipole

Equilibrium pressure profiles of plasmas confined in the field of a dipole magnet are reconstructed using magnetic and x-ray measurements on the levitated dipole experiment (LDX). LDX operates in two distinct modes: with the dipole mechanically supported and with the dipole magnetically levitated. When the dipole is mechanically supported, thermal particles are lost along the field to the suppo...

Production and study of high-beta plasma confined by a superconducting dipole magnet

The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) [J. Kesner, et al. in Fusion Energy 1998 3, 1165 (1999)] is a new research facility that is exploring the confinement and stability of plasma created within the dipole field produced by a strong superconducting magnet. Unlike other configurations in which stability depends on curvature and magnetic shear, magnetohydrodynamic stability of a dipole derives fr...

Stability of Axisymmetric Plasmas in Closed Line Magnetic Fields

The stability of axisymmetric plasmas confined by closed poloidal magnetic field lines is considered. The results are relevant to plasmas in the dipolar fields of stars and planets, as well as the Levitated Dipole Experiment, multipoles, Z pinches and field reversed configurations. The ideal MHD energy principle is employed to study the stability of pressure driven shear Alfvén modes. A point d...
